Verona has been an important urban centre since the time of the Romans in the 3rd century BC. It has been ruled by the Goths, the Lombards and the Carolingians, although for a time it was also part of Bavaria. It grew in power and wealth throughout the Middle Ages to become an independent city state. During the Napoleonic war, it became part of Austria in 1815 but by 1866 it was part of a unified Italy.
