Location of the André Malraux Museum of Fine Arts
The Museum of Fine Arts André Malraux is located in Le Havre, at the entrance of the port and near the harbor master's office.
History of the André Malraux Museum of Fine Arts
Founded in 1845 and directed by the painter Adolphe-Hippolyte Couveley, the Museum of Fine Arts in Le Havre is completely destroyed by the bombings of the Second World War. In 1951, the municipality of Le Havre decided to build a new building. Work began in 1958 and the museum was inaugurated on June 24, 1961 by André Malraux.
To remedy the deterioration aggravated by the sea air, the municipality decided in 1993 to rehabilitate the museum. At the end of the works, the building takes the name of Malraux museum, to which we add the term of modern art in 2011, on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary.
The specificities of the André Malraux Museum of Fine Arts
In 1936, the museum is the beneficiary of the donation of Charles-Auguste Marande including 89 tawny and impressionist works. In 1963, the legacy by Raoul Dufy's widow of 70 works by the painter adds to his collections. A new donation of 206 works of modern art by Hélène Senn-Foulds also enriched the site in 2004. Thus, the establishment decided to affirm its vocation for this period in order to improve the visibility of its collection.
